There’s been a lot of buzz about 8K TVs. They’re currently the best thing going in terms of picture quality and poised to make an even bigger impact in the very near future—future being the keyword. There’s just not very much 8K video content available to watch—yet. When that happens, images will reach a whole new level of color accuracy, contrast, and realism. Just like 4K one-upped 1080p, 8K will outdo 4K.
In the meantime, there’s still a lot of love about 8K TVs. Even “regular old” 1080p and 4K video from cable, satellite, streaming sources, and physical discs never looked so good when displayed on an 8K TV. That’s because 8K TVs have something special built inside—advanced processors that upscale incoming video signals, which results in a finer, clearer, sharper image than the current crop of 4K TVs can muster. Today, upscaling is a critical component of 8K TVs. Without it, the picture on the screen looks no better than what you’re used to seeing on your 4K TV. Until “native” 8K content is widely available, your 8K TV only has high-def 1080p and 4K video to work with. This isn’t a bad thing. Just know that what you’re seeing isn’t exactly an 8K image. It’s a great rendering, but not the real thing. A true 8K experience can only happen when both the incoming content and the capabilities of the display adhere to the technological specifications of the 8K video format.
It could be anywhere from 12 to 24 months before 8K programs, sports, and movies are plentiful. Also in the works is an HDMI cabling specification that enables 8K signals to travel uncompressed from AV components like an 8K cable box to an 8K TV.
Even if all the 8K ingredients—display, cabling, content, and source equipment—were readily available today, is the picture quality that much better than that of your 4K TV? The answer is yes. The picture resolution of 8K content presented on an 8K TV is four times that of a 4K TV. While it’s true that more pixels equate to a more realistic image, the improvement is most noticeable on very large TVs. Bottom line: Trading up to an 8K TV prepares your media room for the future of video and offers unparalleled picture quality in the meantime. If you’re ready to take the next step in your home entertainment plans, an 8K TV is definitely the way to go.
